OUR ANGOLA MISSION

We the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception will soon celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of our Congregation in Santarem Brazil in 1910. From this beginning the Congregation spread to 5 continents and our Missionary Spirit has remained strong as we grew in Brazil, Germany, United States, Taiwan, Philippines, and Namibia.

Anniversaries are a time to reflect on our past and celebrate God’s continuing care and concern for us during these past 100 years. It is also a time to consider the future and to discern God’s ongoing call for us as an International Community of women skilled in cross cultural living and serving in a divided world.

We have decided to respond to the invitation of the Brazilian Friars to open a new International Mission of service to the people of Angola on in the Southwest area of Africa, near our Province of Namibia. Four sisters are now in preparation to open a community in Angola early next year.

Angola, with a population of 15 million people was a Portuguese colony until 1975 therefore the people mainly speak Portuguese and many are Catholic. Rich in natural resources Angola experienced many years of civil war after Independence until Peace was declared in 2004. The country is still filled with landmines and it is projected that it will be 2014 before they are all removed. The infrastructure (roads, government buildings, schools, hospitals, and means of transportation) must be rebuilt. The church is integral to this effort.

Our sisters in the U.S. are unable to provide personnel for this new mission but with the help of our friends and benefactors we hope to offer some financial assistance to this new community.

Our first fundraiser will be on September 20, 2008. We hope you can join us or help us in this project.

For further information please contact Sr. Barbara Fried, smic at the Missionary Sisters - 973-279-3790.

Let us pray for this new endeavor and for the people of Angola at this time in their history.

Thank you for your help.
